TEHRAN - The attack on Saudi embassy in Tehran was beneath the dignity of people of Iran and was not justifiable, the Iranian government spokesman said in his weekly press briefing on Tuesday.

Mohammad Baqer Nobakht promised that justice will be served and those who attacked the Saudi embassy will be penalized, noting, “We ought to see who were behind the attack and what their scheme was.”

Condemning the inhumane execution of Shia scholar Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by Saudi Arabia, “carried out after the fashion of Daesh”, Nobakht explained that it wasn’t just Shia Muslims who raised voice against the brutal act of Saudi Arabia but even Sunnis and human right activists spoke out against the Saudis ruthless act.

He continued to say that Saudi regime that used to back Saddam Hussein up, is now pouring their support for Daesh (ISIS) and the governments that are helping the Takfiri and terrorist groups.

Nobakht then added that Saudi Arabia cannot gain power by bombing defenseless people of Yemen and therefore, it is doomed to failure.

On if Saudi Arabia’s decision to execute Sheikh Nimr, severe ties with Iran, and press some other Arab countries to break off political ties with Iran, are meant to create more gaps and divisions between Shias and Sunnis, Nobakht said the incident is beyond Iran-Saudi Arabia relations and it surely can create a Sunni-Shia gap.

On whether Iran should be seeking regional or international alliance, just as Saudi Arabia has done, the government spokesman said the formation of coalition is for countries like Saudi Arabia.

“Iran doesn’t need to forge an alliance to progress particularly in this day and age when many countries are willing to expand their relations with Iran.”
